Wear OS Weekly

My new weekly column focuses on the state of Wear OS, from new developments and updates to the latest apps and features we want to highlight.

Google successfully turned Android smartwatches into a success story by co-developing Wear OS with Samsung hardware and Qualcomm silicon, saving the brand from years of mediocrity. Now it looks like Android XR will rely on the same partners and path to success. But the road will be an uphill battle.

Android XR, Google’s new platform for XR headsets and smart glasses, will launch with a Samsung headset and Snapdragon chip in 2025. Just like Google let Samsung sell its Galaxy Watch with Wear OS well before it sold its first Pixel Watch, Google is trusting Samsung to spread Android XR to consumers in a way it can’t by itself.
